Beach Road is a main road in the southern suburbs of Adelaide, traveling west from Main South Road and ending at Christies Beach foreshore. The project is focused on the western extent of the road from Overland Terrace to the Esplanade, compromising of several retail outlets and community services.
The road consists of a wide footpath (generally brick paving) and has associated infrastructure typical of a retail street, including street trees, light poles, street furniture and bins. Several large Norfolk pine street trees and several smaller Tuckeroo trees frame the street.
This project has the following objectives for Council:
- Become a streetscape that people want to linger and stay.
- Build strong foundations to enable Beach Road to emerge as a tourism destination.
- Facilitate increased areas on the street for alfresco dining and street activation.
- Provide green areas through increased landscaping and street trees.
- Building on the existing streetscape character through public art.
Construction elements of the project include:
- Four to six nodal areas along Beach Road.
- Extending footpath protuberances over existing parking spaces to support alfresco dining
- New garden beds and street trees and associated irrigation.
- New concrete plinths and seating.
- New paved areas, including pavers and exposed aggregate concrete surfaces.
- Stormwater infrastructure, including the specified pits and pipes.
- Infrastructure connection to power and water to respective support lighting and irrigation.
