In September 2007 Macquarie University became the first university in Australia to offer Gmail, as part of Google Apps for Education, to its Students and recent alumni. In 2009 Macquarie and Google teamed up again to provide 6000 Gmail accounts for the University's Research, Teaching and Administrative Staff.
Macquarie University is currently using Google Apps for all Students and Staff. Student accounts allow Gmail access whereas Staff have access to Gmail, Calendars, Google Drive for file storage and Email Archiving (Postini Message Centre with a current transition to Google Vault underway).
More recently, the University has evaluated its ongoing requirements for email and calendaring against sovereignty, security, privacy considerations, and other business drivers. A major requirement is the ability to provision and maintain data within Australia through Microsoft's Australian Data Centres. As a result, the University has decided to move Staff to Office 365.
At this time, Students will be remaining on Google Apps and Gmail.
