Laboratory validation of the rejuvenator assessment protocol
Tender ID: 542384
Tender Details
Tender Description
Purpose:
The purpose of this project is to facilitate the efficient management of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in asphalt by validating the recently developed binder rejuvenator assessment protocol from completed Austroads Project APT6247 Increasing asphalt recycling with binder rejuvenators.
Scope:
A comprehensive laboratory validation program was proposed in Project APT6247 to ensure the protocol is suitable to use. The scope of this project includes evaluating up to four typical rejuvenators through the protocol as follows:
• Stage 1 – Assess quality control properties (viscosity at 60°C, flashpoint, mass change after rolling thin film oven), bitumen compatibility evaluation including assessment of the suitability of current segregation tests (AGPT-T108 and EN 13399) to rejuvenators and ageing susceptibility after blending with bitumen.
• Stage 2 – Comparing RAP binder blend designs using viscosity at 25°C and 60°C on a laboratory aged C320 binder as described in Austroads technical report Development of the Austroads Rejuvenator Evaluation Protocol (AP-T366-22). Comparing the rejuvenator addition rates and resultant binder blend viscosity at 25°C and 60°C will indicate if the current binder blend viscosity at 60°C range is suitable.
The project will develop test methods and a draft specification that allows implementation of the protocol.
