Scope
A performance-related asphalt specification will allow for the implementation of innovative, sustainable, and fit-for purpose asphalt mixes in Australia and New Zealand.
The project will involve two stages:
• Stage 1 – Develop quality assurance guidelines for implementing a new performance-related asphalt specification, including a review of the repeatability/reproducibility of the performance test methods proposed and asses the effect of production variability on the performance test results.
• Stage 2 – Develop a new Austroads performance-related specification for asphalt, technical report and an update to the Austroads Guide to Pavement Technology Part 4B: Asphalt (AGPT04B).
This project will undertake an extensive literature review and transport agency and industry consultation to:
• identify an appropriate structure and framework for a performance-related asphalt specification that includes requirements for the supply, manufacture, construction and testing of asphalt materials during construction.
• identify appropriate quality control and quality assurance methods for inclusion in a performance related asphalt specification.
• assess the repeatability and reproducibility of the performance test methods included in the concept specification framework.
Laboratory testing will be undertaken on a selection of standard asphalt mixes to:
• further assess/validate the repeatability and reproducibility of the flexural modulus and fatigue test, deformation resistance test, the tensile strength ratio test and asphalt permeability test.
• assess the impact of production variability on the performance properties of asphalt mixes. It is envisaged that the laboratory testing will be undertaken with some in-kind support from industry and the relevant transport agencies.
The project will build on the following previous Austroads projects:
• APT1953 National Performance-based Asphalt Specification Framework previously developed a concept performance-related asphalt mix design framework
• APT6123 National Harmonisation of Test Methods Used in Asphalt Performance Specifications delivered the first component of the new specification framework. This project is nearing completion.
