Norfolk Island Regional Council (NIRC) is seeking expressions of interest from organisations wishing to be involved in the development of a Community Reuse Centre, to support Norfolk Island’s waste management goals.
In 2022, the NIRC Strategic Waste Management Review identified the need for a community reuse centre or recycle shop, to divert waste from export and landfilling. The Community Reuse Centre aims to salvage and return useable products for community use. This would include building products, repairable electronics and furniture, sporting equipment, glass- and kitchenware and whitegoods, as well as other useful items. The centre is expected to provide value to the community, raise the awareness around waste management and enhance the island circular economy.
Funding has been provided to NIRC by the Commonwealth Government to develop the Community Reuse Centre, scheduled for development in 2023. It will be located in the precinct around the existing NIRC Waste Management Centre and will be developed to suit community needs, including the potential to develop learning spaces for the community and other activities, where planning controls allow.
NIRC would like to hear from organisations wishing to be involved in the development of the centre, in particular parties that may have an interest in running the centre on behalf of NIRC. Preference will be given to community-based organisations or parties that can demonstrate a commitment to community outcomes.
We request the following as a minimum in responding to the EOI:
- Background of your organisation, including experience working on similar projects, either as
an organisation or individual experience
- Interest in development/operation of the Community Reuse Centre
- Preliminary ideas on the scope of the Community Reuse Centre
