The Corangamite Catchment Management Authority
About us:
The Corangamite Catchment Management Authority (CCMA or Principal) was established in 1997 by the Victorian Government to ensure the protection and sustainable development of land, vegetation and water resources within a boundary stretching from Ballarat to Geelong and along the coast to Peterborough. About 508,000 people live in the catchment which has a total area of 13,340 square kilometers, 175 km of coastline, 15,960 km of waterways and 152 community-based environment groups. It includes all or part of the municipalities of City of Ballarat, City of Greater Geelong, Borough of Queenscliff and the Shires of Moorabool, Surfcoast, Corangamite, Golden Plains, Colac Otway, and Moyne.
Vision:
Healthy and productive lands and waters cared for by thriving communities.
Project:
BARWON RIVER PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE
The subject bridge at Marnock Reserve, located at 55-69 Riversdale Road, Newtown, falls within the management area of the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority (CCMA). This bridge crosses a City of Greater Geelong culvert asset and is situated in an area that experiences high pedestrian traffic, particularly during sporting events such as running and rowing regattas. The existing timber pedestrian bridge, which is over 20 years old, is approximately 1200mm wide and allows for only one pedestrian to pass at a time in each direction. This results in congestion and potential collisions, especially during high-traffic events. Given its age and condition, repairs to the existing bridge have become increasingly unsuitable and inefficient.
The CCMA has therefore planned for the replacement of the existing bridge, incorporating more durable materials and a wider design to accommodate two-way pedestrian traffic and access for maintenance vehicles. The site is prone to flooding when the river reaches a minor flood level of approximately 2.3 AHD but is stable under normal river conditions (1m AHD). The proposed bridge will span 9.1 meters between abutments, with a clear width of 3.0 meters between handrails, as recommended by Austroads Guide to Road Design Part 6A: Paths for Walking and Cycling. The bridge deck structure and handrails will comprise of structural streel, with a fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) deck grating and be founded upon a piled abutment at either end.
The works of this project/contract comprise the supply of all labour, plant, equipment, and materials necessary for the construction of a pedestrian bridge on the walking track in Marnock Reserve adjacent to the Barwon River.
