Overview

About Inland Railf

Inland Rail is a fast freight line stretching approximately 1,600km that will connect Melbourne and Brisbane via regional Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland.

It will enhance our national freight and supply chain capabilities, connecting existing freight routes through rail, roads and ports, and supporting Australia's growth.

It will better link businesses, manufacturers, and producers to national and global markets and generate opportunities for industries and regions during construction and beyond. Delivering Inland Rail will help us keep pace with the increasing freight demands of Australia's growing population.

Shifting more goods onto rail means faster, more reliable freight; safer, less congested roads; and fewer emissions.

Inland Rail Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of ARTC, is building Inland Rail on behalf of the Australian Government.

Beveridge to Albury

The Beveridge to Albury section is a brownfield enhancement project in Victoria that will upgrade 262km of existing rail corridor. The section spans from Beveridge, north of Melbourne to the NSW/Victoria border, at Albury-Wodonga, and will enhance upgrade works already completed on the North East rail line.
Travelling from north to south, the existing rail corridor runs largely parallel to the Hume Highway from the Murray River at Wodonga to the outskirts of Melbourne. It then shares the Regional Victorian broad-gauge rail corridor (V/Line) from Seymour to Beveridge.
The project scope for Victoria is driven by the requirements to meet horizontal and vertical clearances for the safe operation of double-stacked trains.
The Victorian section of Inland Rail is being delivered in two tranches - Tranche 1 major construction started in early 2023 and is being delivered by McConnell Dowell.
The Tranche 2 construction contract was awarded to John Holland in June 2024, with major construction expected to start in early 2025.
Construction of the entire Beveridge to Albury section in Victoria is expected to be completed in 2027.
