Tender Description
GRDC supports study tours that help build the capability of Australian grain growers by exposing them to new ideas, practices and networks that align with GRDC’s research, development and extension (RD&E) priorities. A well-planned study tour can provide lessons on issues relevant to participants and accelerate the uptake of research and development (R&D) outputs. Ultimately improving the profitability and sustainability of grain-growing operations.

A well-planned study tour can provide lessons on issues relevant to participants and accelerate the uptake of research and development (R&D) outputs. Ultimately improving the profitability and sustainability of grain-growing operations.
GRDC support is available to organisers who can demonstrate how their proposed tour will deliver clear learning objectives and tangible benefits to participants and the broader grains industry. Through the application, organisers will need to demonstrate how GRDC sponsorship will:
- deliver value for GRDC and the broader Australian grains industry and community
- promote innovation in grains RD&E
- value-add or complement existing GRDC activities.
When applying, presume evaluators have no prior knowledge of your group, issues you seek to understand or people and places you plan to visit. Applicants should not expect that a conversation with a GRDC staff member means evaluators will have the context or background for the application.
GRDC considers the following when reviewing applications:
- Participant Composition: It is unlikely that GRDC will support an application where fewer than 80% of participants are Australian grain growers.
- Value for Money: At least 50% of total travel costs should be contributed by participants or the tour organiser.
- Regional Representation: GRDC aims to ensure equity in opportunity, support and benefit across its regions.
- GRDC engagement: consideration to engage with GRDC’s Grower Relations Managers (region and timing dependant) and/or GRDC events inclusion e.g., group to attend a GRDC update
- Study Tour communications plan: how the learnings and outcomes of the tour will be disseminated beyond the attending group at the completion of the study tour.
To help demonstrate return on investment and strengthen your submission, please include:
- A list of participants who have expressed interest, clearly identifying whether each is a grain grower or not e.g., agronomist, advisor.
- A draft budget outlining all activities for which funding is sought. This does not need to be final/confirmed budget but must not include a contingency line. Budgets should be uploaded in excel format as an additional attachment.
Additional Important Information
- Consider the risks associated with undergoing travel, take steps to mitigate these, and ensure tour participants and those they are proposing to visit are comfortable with the arrangements prior to applying.
- GRDC support may be reconsidered where circumstances change, and the activities or purpose of the tour significantly changes from what was described in the application.
- Talk to leading researchers or growers in other regions implementing best practice to help shape your tour, GRDC can help facilitate discussions where appropriate.
- It is a system requirement that there is a closing date and time for applications in the Grains Investment Portal (GIP).
- GRDC Strongly encourages organisers to plan ahead when applying. Applications submitted whereby the tour dates are prior to application closure date can still be considered by GRDC, if an email requested is received to the staff member listed under ‘Document Contact and Enquiries’.
- Growers may apply for support to bring researchers or experts to speak to local grower on a particular topic. GRDC will consider these application where it is more economical and practical for growers.
