Maximising realised yield genetic gain in some pulse crops (chickpea, faba bean and lentil) is one of the ongoing and major challenges faced by breeders in variety improvement. This challenge is compounded by abiotic and biotic stresses exacerbated by climate changes. However, the availability of genetic diversity, advances in genomics, rapid generation turn over and data analytics including different Artificial intelligence (AI) approaches presents the opportunity to harness these to identify most favourable parental combinations of yield enhancing traits and facilitate their deployment and validation to achieve a yield genetic gain of 1.5% in diverse Australian target production environments, the focus of this investment.
