The rapid pace of technological change and the emergence of new platforms and services including messaging apps, interactive games and live-streaming services has given rise to new ways for users to interact online and has created new risks. As a result, the Online Safety Act was enacted to modernise and strengthen the powers of the eSafety Commissioner in order to boost protections for Australians and increase the responsibility on industry to keep their users safe online.
eSafety is looking for several experienced and self-motivated Senior Lawyers or policy officers (EL1 equivalent) with preferably strong codes of practice or standard making experience. The successful applicant will join a small team of codes experts to support the legal services team in working with industry to shape and draft robust codes of practice aimed at regulating the access and exposure of harmful online content captured by the Online Safety Act 2021 under the Online Content Scheme. The codes will be mandatory across 8 online industry participants once registered. Strong experience in providing practical and robust advice on a range of codes of practice matters, including drafting across a range of industry sectors would be desirable.
It will suit a senior lawyer or policy officer with interest and experience in co-regulation, drafting, investigations and enforcement of industry codes of practice or Standards.
You should be strategic and able to provide advice to a range of audiences including the eSafety commissioner on potential Industry Standards as well as advising on technical online safety law reform issues.
