Mount Alexander Shire Council (MASC) has identified a requirement for the upgrade of Victory Parks Drainage infrastructure, rehabilitation of the existing granitic sand pathway and associated works.
Victory Park is situated in the centre of the Castlemaine CBD. It is bordered by the visitor Information Centre, the RSL, the shire’s major supermarket (Maxi IGA) and the Midland Hwy.
The park has high visitation from residents and visitors to the region, attracting regular foot traffic from regular local users as well as visitors attracted by a number of community events held in Victory Park, including Australia Day, the Big Dance, community climate change events and the Youth Awards.
The layout of the gravel path which encircles the northern lawn and the southern lawn is significant as an original element of Victory Park from the c.1921 design.
The current path surface is rough and has cyclical (seasonal) problems with drainage, making access through sections of the park difficult after heavy rain or during winter periods.
The project will upgrade the path and drainage in line with Australian Standards, delivering a path that incorporates Universal access and design provisions at all entrances to the park.
