This invitation for Expressions of Interest seeks co-investment partners to facilitate the validation of physiological and/or biochemical traits in wheat through establishment of R&D partnerships between academic researchers and commercial wheat breeders. The overall aim is to accelerate the adoption of valuable traits in wheat breeding programs, and in the long term the delivery to Australian growers of wheat varieties with significantly enhanced water-limited yield potential.
Specifically, GRDC seeks Responses that will accomplish the following objectives:
(a) Establish R&D partnerships involving research organisations and commercial wheat breeders with an active breeding program in Australia, including public/private and/or national/international collaborations where appropriate;
(b) Validate physiological and/or biochemical traits with high anticipated impact in water limited yield potential in wheat in Australian relevant production environments, and with germplasm adapted to these environments. This will include at least: (1) benchmarking Australian elite material against best performers identified in previous research, regarding the target trait(s); (2) assessing existing genetic diversity for the target trait(s) within Australian breeding populations; (3) developing a clear value proposition for the target trait(s); and
(c) Define a path to deployment for the target trait(s).
