Strathalbyn District Centre – 13-0033 Albyn Terrace and Sunter Street, Streetscape Projects

⁠⁠⁠The Strathalbyn District Centre – Traffic, Parking and Streetscape Plan is a Council initiative that commenced in 2017 with the purpose of reinvigorating the township, providing increased connectivity, tourism, and economic opportunity.

This initiative involved an extensive township study and public consultation to develop future direction and project outcomes. The project deliverables were compiled into four stages to be rolled out over several years subject to funding availability. The Albyn Terrace, Sunter Street, and Wayfinding projects are three of the projects identified as part of Stage 1.

Detailed engineering, landscaping, and signage plans with specifications have been developed to enable the delivery of the projects;

Sunter Street: The main focus of this project is the Sunter Street road frontage area in front of Saint Andrews Church, adjacent to Alfred Place. Currently there is a lack of pedestrian connectivity from the bridge to Alfred Place, and an unsupported cut in the landscape requiring retaining and beautification.

The key outcomes of this project are the provision of a stone retaining wall to support the bank, a new exposed aggregate concrete footpath to connect Alfred Place to Albyn Terrace, improvement of the plantings and landscaping, and decorative lighting around the church to highlight this heritage building.

At the rear of the church along Alfred Place is an existing carpark that is going to have some additional parking spaces constructed with minor amenity plantings adjacent;

Albyn Terrace: This project area is located at the intersection of Sunter Street, Albyn Terrace, and Rankine Street. Currently this three way intersection is configured as an inefficient use of space and the large crossing distances create a hazardous environment for pedestrians.

To better utilise this space the intersection will be modified and with the newly available space the public amenity can be increased. Additional carparking, pedestrian connectivity, streetscaping, lighting, street trees, garden beds, and street furniture will be provided.

1. Wayfinding Signage: A suite of wayfinding signage has been developed to guide tourists around the many attractions of Strathalbyn. The signs range from major entry signs, to precinct information signs, and localised information signs for trails and heritage. The network of signs will be placed in strategically chosen locations and at points of local interest.
2. This will be an exclusive contract to deliver the services.
3. The term of the contract will be November 2020 to March 2021 inclusive with no extension.
