Background:
The College has been contacted by Avant Mutual seeking three (3) representatives to participate in two online roundtable discussions. The roundtables are planned to be held in the late afternoon of 9 and 30 September.
Avant Mutual are currently running a project exploring the spectrum of medico-legal issues that may arise in clinical genomics testing, with a goal to produce some guidance on how to get consent for genomics testing.
Input sought from experts in the field revealed that current concern relates to testing and the decision-making processes around testing. A discussion paper has been prepared on this topic.
The roundtables will bring together key stakeholders, where the paper will be presented and potential next steps will be discussed.
Avant Mutual are seeking College representatives who understand the day-to-day needs of physicians and possess skills to guide, and/or action, education and advocacy in this area of medicine. The representatives do not require genomics expertise, but rather knowledge of the issues confronting everyday physicians.
Clinical Genomics is an emerging issue for many members of the College. The roundtable discussions are an opportunity to highlight the current concerns and issues faced by members in the clinical setting.
The Roundtables are planned to be held on the following dates (1-2 hour time slot, exact times to be confirmed):
- Roundtable 1 – late afternoon, Wednesday 9 September
- Roundtable 2 - late afternoon, Wednesday 30 September
Term and commitment:
- The College representatives would need to be available for both online roundtable dates.
- The College representatives will be appointed for the duration of the two roundtables.
- Adhere to the College’s Code of Conduct
- Provide the RACP with a report or summary of meeting discussions and outcomes as agreed with the Policy and Advocacy department
- The roundtables will be held online – current format for any College related meetings until COVID-19 circumstances allows for safer member face to face gatherings
