Trade Waste Strategic Growth Investigation
Tender ID: 414110
Tender Details
Tender Description
South East Water is one of Melbourne’s three state-owned metropolitan water retailers. We provide water, sewerage, trade waste and recycled water services for residents and businesses in Melbourne’s south east, located in the state of Victoria, Australia.
The sewerage network in the south east (SE) region of Melbourne includes industrial and commercial connections that discharge their liquid waste into local sewer catchments, which is transferred to treatment plants for processing and resource recovery. South East Water has around 8,000 industrial and commercial trade waste customers which provide vital manufacturing, health, food, construction and other services to the broader community.
These trade waste customers must ensure discharge from their property to sewer adheres to the waste quality standards stipulated in Melbourne’s ‘Statement of Approved Acceptance Criteria’. This document provides details on the currently allowable nature and levels of the characteristics of trade waste that can be discharged to ensure the waste can be safely managed. These criteria are largely applied uniformly across the region.
Trade waste volumes generated in the region are processed at either Melbourne Water’s Eastern (ETP) or Western (WTP) Treatment Plant or South East Water’s eight local water recycling plants before, largely, being discharged to the environment. Approximately 80% of the industrial trade waste is currently being channelled to the ETP.
South East Water is undertaking a strategic growth planning investigation that explores different approaches for future management of trade waste loads. We are planning to engage with suitable partner to deliver the required outcomes.
