Not much larger than a budgerigar the Orange-Bellied Parrot (Neophema chrysogaster) is one of Australia's most threatened species. The wild population has been in decline for at least the last century, and there are currently estimated to be fewer than 50 birds in the wild. Without intervention, recent modelling estimates the likelihood of extinction in the next 20 years to be almost 90%. One intervention to be undertaken at WORZ is the establishment of winter ranching aviaries. These aviaries will be used to house wild birds temporarily relocated over winter from the home range in South-Western Tasmania and hold in aviaries until their return to their breeding site in Tasmania in spring. This will replicate their winter migration to the mainland and eliminate the dangerous flight crossing of Bass Strait.
We seek contractors to design and construct the ranching facility based on the concepts and requirements outlined in this RFT. Alternate proposals that meet the brief will also be considered provided a conforming tender is submitted along with the alternate proposal . The nominated contractor will work closely with Werribee Open Range Zoo staff to design the aviaries to their requirements.
The contractor may choose to use a proprietary system adapted to our needs to fulfil the brief. Due to these being wild birds largely unaccustomed to captivity they will require details over and above standard aviaries including soft nylon mesh inner lining, heat prevention and snake and rodent protection. Due to the facilities proposed site being close to our Plains Wanderer Breeding Facility construction block-out dates will apply. The OBP Ranching Aviary needs to be completed prior to March 2020 in order to be ready to house birds by next winter.
