Tender Details
Tender Description
This Tender is invited by the Issuer.
The Bureau of Meteorology invites applications for a Pacific Climate Data Scientist to join the Pacific Climate Services (PCS) Team within Environmental Prediction Services, Community Services Group.
Australia is committed to supporting weather, ocean and climate science in the Pacific, as climate variability and change represents a major risk for most of these Pacific Island countries. The Bureau has been supporting the Pacific for over 30 years with regards to supporting the development of climate and ocean science operational services at Pacific National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHS). This includes improving NMHS ability to monitor, predict and communicate information associated with extreme climate and ocean events.
Your role will involve supporting the DFAT and New Zealand MFAT Climate and Ocean Support Program in the Pacific (COSPPac) to develop high-quality long-term historical climate datasets, maintain the Climate Indices for Pacific Sectorial Applications (CIPSA) Portal https://www.bom.gov.au/climate/cipsap/ and publish and promote findings from the updated review of trends in mean and extreme climate across the western Pacific. The CIPSA Portal enables the analysis of trends in a range of mean and extreme meteorological parameters, helping to improve understanding of climate variability and change throughout the Pacific region.
Aside from a strong knowledge of climate variability and change especially with regards to the Pacific Islands, this position requires good data analytical skills including the ability to quality control and homogenise station datasets. Some knowledge of statistics and data management is also required.
In addition to delivering operational tasks, you will be required to build partnerships and relationships with implementation partners, Pacific National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) and NMHS primary stakeholders. Travel to and short stay (3-10 days) in Pacific Island countries is an essential part of this role. The successful candidate will be required carry out their duties with limited supervision.
