For many thousands of 19th century migrants, who spent months travelling to Australia by ship, Cape Otway was their first sight of land after leaving Europe, Asia and North America.
Hundreds of lives were lost along this shipwreck coast – a sad but fascinating history which led to the building of the Lightstation on the cliffs edge.
Built in 1848, the lighthouse known as the ‘Beacon of Hope,’ sits 90 metres above the pristine ocean of Bass Strait.
Cape Otway Lighthouse is the oldest surviving lighthouse on mainland Australia and considered the most significant. This leading attraction on the Great Ocean Road is a must for all visitors.
We are seeking an experienced contractor with a proven history of working on a Victorian Heritage Listed buildings, the Lighthouse requires significant conservation repairs.
The Lighthouse is located at Cape Otway Station on Lighthouse road in amongst the Cape Otway National Park.
Scope:
• A scheduled list of works, repairs and maintenance of the Light Tower
• Project management of the list of works, working closely with the local staff
• Potential contractors must be able to demonstrate prior experience managing conservation and maintenance projects on heritage listed building in a coastal and marine environment, preference for actual works on a lighthouse.
