Project Overview

The project involves the refurbishment of Level 2, P Block LDA, currently occupied by Monash Health’s Clayton Mental Health Services within the Monash Medical Centre (MMC) at 246 Clayton Road, Clayton, VIC 3168. The facility is a 31-bed acute psychiatric unit providing care for adults aged 25-64.

The proposed improvements to LDA at P Block, are aimed at enhancing recovery, dignity, and respect in compliance with the Victorian Mental Health Act 2014. The focus is on upgrading both outdoor and indoor environments to support therapeutic benefits and improve operational efficiencies.

The purpose of this project is to:

Outdoor Enhancements

The large courtyard requires a refurbished heightened fence to prevent illicit substance transfers. Replacement of uneven flooring with soft, sports-friendly surfaces, alongside the installation of a basketball hoop and table tennis table, is recommended to encourage physical activities. Additional outdoor furniture and the removal of obsolete concrete planters will improve the usability and aesthetics of the space. A new chalkboard wall and sports equipment will further enhance recreational opportunities.

The middle courtyard's transformation into a therapeutic space is proposed, featuring a Japanese garden and vegetable planters, with picnic style tables for family visits. Decorative murals or window frosting will enrich the therapeutic atmosphere.

The staff room required internal refurbishment to refresh the staff area. Minor demolition works and general aesthetic upgrades are the focus. New kitchenette facilities and lockers are required, along with general lighting upgrade and services relocation works.

These upgrades align with the goals of the Victorian Mental Health Act, fostering a safer, more therapeutic environment that enhances consumer well-being and supports staff in delivering high-quality care. The intent is to adopt a Design & Build turnkey approach with using concept/SD information to procure a builder.

The objectives of this project are to:

• Increasing fence height and adding shade attachments for sun protection of large courtyard fence
• Repair outdoor flooring with court markings for ball sports
• Procure outdoor furniture, equipment, and a chalkboard wall to improve spaces usability
• Remove concrete pavers in the middle courtyard
• Featuring a Japanese garden and outdoor planters suitable for growing vegetables
• Installed murals or printed window frosting to enhance the therapeutic atmosphere of the space
• Staff room refurbishment and overall refresh. Minor layout changes.
