Tender Description

Expressions of interest are open for General Physician Fellows recognised in Obstetric Medicine to join the Committee as the SOMANZ Representative.

The ATC is currently seeking 1 Fellow to join the Committee as an observer for a 1-year term.

The Advanced Training Committee (ATC) in General and Acute Care Medicine (GACM) oversees the Advanced Training Program in GACM within the Adult Medicine Division.

One of the Committee’s key responsibilities is to monitor and assess individual trainee progress in GACM in Australia. This includes assessing a range of applications such as training applications and applications for Recognition of Prior Learning.

As an observer, you'll:

  • attend the remaining 2 ATC meetings virtually in 2025, and 1 in-person meeting in Sydney (typically held in March)
  • occasionally respond to out-of-session email requests from the Committee Secretariat seeking ATC advice or decision on trainee cases and applications
  • actively engage in matters raised at meetings (note: observers don't hold voting rights)
  • gain a comprehensive understanding of Committee operations for future transition into a full member role

This is a great opportunity for Fellows who want to support the training of future General and Acute Care Physicians. You'll help improve the program, influence workforce planning, and contribute to the direction of the specialty in Australia.

You'll also help review training requirements, assessments and the curriculum, in consultation with SOMANZ and other stakeholders. You’ll provide recommendations to the College Education Committee through the Adult Medicine Division Education Committee.

Responsibilities of the ATC

  • monitor training and support for GACM supervisors
  • accredit Advanced Training sites and conduct site visits
  • advise on matters related to Overseas Trained Physicians
  • modify individual training requirements per College policies
  • assess specialist recognition for Fellows who did not complete the GACM Advanced Training Program
  • review Advanced Training Research Projects

Meetings are held 3 times per year, with 1 typically in person (in March) and the other 2 via videoconference.

For further information refer to the Advanced Training Committee - General & Acute Care Medicine (Australia) Terms of Reference (PDF).

If successful, you may be invited to join the ATC as a full member after the observer year, for a 3-year term (renewable).
