Tender Description

The Waihi Arts Centre and Museum, owned by the Hauraki District Council, was originally constructed in 1913 as a Technical School and later converted into the Waihi Museum in 1962. The site is managed and operated by the Waihi Arts Centre and Museum Association.

The building has been assessed as below the minimum 34% NBS, and in 2022, the council explored options for seismic strengthening, but costs prohibited a full upgrade.

The proposed scope of works includes a full like-for-like reroof, which entails the replacement of all spouting and downpipes as highlighted in the architectural drawings. Additionally, the chimney will be strengthened in place per the structural design, which addresses the greatest fall hazard identified in the risk assessments.

The project also includes other minor items to tidy up the appearance and safety of the building.

Given the building's classification as a Category A - Heritage Item, it is crucial that all works, including material selection, receive approval from Heritage New Zealand. Heritage NZ has expressed a preference for strengthening the chimney in place rather than replacing it with a lightweight replica, ensuring the preservation of the building's historical integrity.
