Adjacent to its main health service campus in Winchelsea, Hesse Rural Health has property which it plans to refurbish and use as a retail business (an ‘opportunity shop’). The existing building has several Heritage features which must be either maintained or replaced in accordance with the architect’s design.

As part of stage one of the project, works proposed for the site will involve the restoration of an existing retail building. Initially built and operating as a bakery, Hesse and its appointed architect (AllenKong Architect Pty Ltd) has developed a design which embraces and recognises the site’s valued heritage, ensuring the legacy of both the former Bakery and attached dwelling on site are protected. Stage two of the project plans to extend the footprint at the rear of the building. Heritage elements of the project generally focus on walls, windows and roofing rather than fixtures and fittings.
