Reducing representation of Aboriginal people in custody is a priority, with Corrections Victoria (CV) committed to working in partnership with the Aboriginal Justice Caucus to implement priorities from Phase 4 of the Aboriginal Justice Agreement.
Kaka Wangity Wangin–Mirrie Cultural Program Grants support Aboriginal organisations to deliver Aboriginal-led programs in prisons, with the aim to maximise opportunities for effective rehabilitation and reintegration into the community.
Since the establishment of the Kaka Wangity Wangin–Mirrie Cultural Program Grants Scheme in 2016, two grant rounds have occurred:
- 2017-2019 with a focus on Cultural Strengthening; Family Violence (victims and perpetrators); Healing; Parenting Skills; Women’s Healing; and Victimisation
- 2019-2024 with a focus on Cultural Knowledge and Cultural Healing. This grants program will end 30 June 2024.
A competitive grants process was undertaken for each grant scheme and successful service providers were funded to deliver programs in the above-mentioned key areas.
A new round of grants has been approved and will commence 1 July 2024. Applications for funding will be sought for programs and services that have a focus on Cultural Knowledge, Cultural Healing and Kinship and Family Engagement.
