The Lake Margaret hydroelectric power scheme is located approximately 13km north of Queenstown off the A10 Zeehan Highway and is considered a remote site. The scheme comprises upper and lower parts.
The upper Lake Margaret scheme was originally commissioned by the Mt Lyell Mining and Railway Co. in 1914 and is listed on the Tasmanian Heritage Register.
The scheme was refurbished by Hydro Tasmania in 2009 with a new 1.6m x 2.4km wood stave headrace pipeline.
A purpose designed pipeline trolley is the only means of accessing the elevated pipeline for inspection and maintenance, as well as providing limited transport for materials and equipment for both the pipeline and the dam.
After 14 years' exposure to the West Coast weather on the hillside, the wood staves are rotting, and the trolley has become unserviceable.
The purpose of this project is in two parts:
- Refurbish Trolley
- Provide a weatherproof storage shelter to prevent deterioration of the trolley when not in use and remove old shed.
