The Hydro Tasmania head office building located at 4 Elizabeth Street was built and occupied in early 1970's, the office complex consisting of thirteen (13) floor levels from the basement, access to floor levels is via an internal stair well and three (3) lifts.

The main entry into the building is from the ground floor entrance off Elizabeth Street, the ground floor to the eleventh floor (11) consists of office work areas, the plant room is located on the twelfth (12) floor and the Lift motor room is on the roof, the garage is in the basement.
The lifts normally operate between the ground floor and eleventh floor. For maintenance the lift cars and liftwells can be accessed from any floor level including the basement and plant room on the twelfth floor. The lift motor room is accessed by the internal stair well from the twelfth (12) floor.
The lifts were originally supplied by Otis Elevator Company (OTIS) and installed by Johns & Waygood Limited in the early 70's, around 1997 OTIS upgrade the control system and over the years other upgrades have been carried out on the lift doors, car interiors and landing fixtures.
The lifts are approaching or have passed their original design life, and do not comply with all the current regulatory compliance requirements, and with parts becoming obsolete, Hydro Tasmania is undertaking a project to upgrade the existing lifts.

The key objectives of this scope of works are to modernise the lifts to comply with regulatory compliance.

It is expected the works shall extend the service life of the lifts for thirty (30) years.
