Located just off the pristine coast of Croajingolong National Park, Gabo Island is surrounded by magnificent views and offers a unique day trip or stay. Rich in cultural history, the island features the only operating island lighthouse in Victoria.
Parks Victoria has received funding to enhance the visitor experience at Gabo Island by uplifting and expanding the current visitor accommodation offer. There are a number of heritage buildings which form the Lighthouse Precinct on the island. This project aims to refurbish the three existing heritage cottages, increasing the Island's accommodation capacity and improving the unique visitor experience. Currently, one cottage is rented out for guests, another serves as an office and accommodation for the Island Rangers, while the third is currently closed. Works will include urgent and essential repairs as well as new fit-out, new kitchens, and new bathrooms.
This proposal seeks to:
- upgrade the Signalman’s Quarters to enable it to be used as additional accommodation;
- connect the Head Lightkeeper’s residence grey water disposal to the recently installed wastewater system;
- address urgent and essential repairs to both the Assistant and Head Lightkeeper’s residences; and
- renovate the Assistant and Head Lightkeeper's residences to provide a higher quality offering for visitors and/or staff (provisional Stage 2).
Parks Victoria is seeking proposals from suitably qualified contractors that can supply and carry out these renovation works in accordance with the project specification which includes a Heritage Permit and Aborginal Cultural Heritage Contingency Plan.
