About the Australia Pacific Climate Partnership
The Australia Pacific Climate Partnership (the Climate Partnership) was established in 2018 to support Australia’s aid programs to increase the effectiveness of support for climate change action and disaster resilience in the Pacific.
The Climate Partnership Support Unit was established at the outset of the Partnership and is entering its second phase (2022-2024). The Support Unit has a team of technical experts based in Australia and the Pacific who work with DFAT aid investment program managers and their implementing partners to integrate climate change and disaster risk reduction, broker and enable better access to actionable climate change and disaster knowledge in the region, and undertake Program-wide monitoring, evaluation and learning.
About the Role
Reporting to the Climate Partnership Team Leader, the Gender and Social Inclusion (GESI) Adviser will provide leadership and management of APCP gender and social inclusion activities including program management, knowledge brokering and integration of GESI into climate change and disaster risk reduction activities for DFAT programs in the Pacific.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities of the GESI Adviser are:
- Update the APCP GESI Strategy and oversee its implementation, working with the Support Unit, APCP stakeholders and support implementation partners.
- Provide thought leadership for APCP GESI programming, including design and management of APCP GESI programs with partners to fill knowledge gaps, develop tools and support initiatives to strengthen inclusive climate and disaster resilience in the Australian aid program.
- Promote the use and improvement of knowledge management mechanisms to share information about GESI- informed climate action and disaster resilience.
- Provide collaboration and support to APCP sector programs to address GESI.
- Work with APCP technical managers to develop country-specific Integration Plans to strengthen inclusive climate and disaster resilience in DFAT programs in the Pacific and undertake technical tasks in such as participation on program design, evaluation, review or planning teams to strengthen GESI.
- Provide advice, training and support to APCP staff, DFAT, and other partners to apply an intersectionality approach between climate change, geo hazards disasters and GESI.
- Work with DFAT to support an increased consideration of GESI into policy and program design and implementation, relating to integrating climate change and disaster resilience.
- Build and support a culture of learning and improvement within the APCP in relation to GESI.
- Work closely with the Support Unit’s Climate Change and GESI Adviser to ensure synergies across the work program and to strengthen GESI outcomes in APCP activities.
Selection Criteria
Qualifications
- Post-graduate qualification relation to international development, gender relations, or similar.
Skills and Experience
- Minimum 10 years providing advisory services, pertinent to gender and social inclusion, to international development programs;
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of DFAT aid policies and strategies, and other relevant government policies.
- Demonstrated international development experience in gender equality and social inclusion related programming, particular in the areas of climate change and disaster resilience
- Proven ability in thinking and working politically; building strategic and strong working relationships with government and industry stakeholders; and identifying solutions to sensitive political and cultural issues.
- Demonstrated ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives in the Pacific context, and a professional commitment to promote a culture of gender equality and social inclusion.
- Demonstrated ability to provide advisory services, coaching and mentoring to the diverse stakeholders in government, civil society and the private sector, in a complex operating environment.
