Newcastle Airport is Australia's 13th busiest Airport. Situated on the mid-NSW coastline, approximately two hours' drive north of Sydney, and attracting upwards of 1.25 million passengers per year, it serves as a key connector for passengers to the East Coast International transit hubs, and as a major domestic gateway to Northern NSW, Queensland and Victoria. Also providing a seasonal route to New Zealand, transit route extensions into North Queensland along with the announcement of an Adelaide route, have driven customer demand in the past year.
Most recently, State and Federal Government funding, along with community stakeholder support has been achieved for a Master Plan initiative to expand the site's capability and looks set to double passenger numbers by 2036, by construction of 'Code E' runway (International Passenger and freight carrier capacity) upgrade along with general airport capacity enhancements including terminal development upgrade.
