Tender Details
Tender Description
Zoos Victoria is looking to build a large facility at Healesville Sanctuary to house and rehabilitate raptors and other large bird species presented to the Australian Wildlife Health Centre (AWHC), and associated landscaping works.
A large donut-shaped aviary is proposed, allowing birds to continuously fly in a circular pattern in a ‘flight training area’ (the Flyway). Rounded aviaries demonstrate a range of positive rehabilitation outcomes when compared with the more traditional rectangular aviaries that provide raptors with few wing beats and no room for turning.
The facility should also have the ability to house 4-6 raptors in connected enclosures. The design must encourage flight fitness and muscle strength while limiting human interaction, reducing stress to the bird and the risk of injury to staff. The use of a webcam system will allow birds to be monitored and assessed remotely, as well as to showcase animal care.
The estimated construction commencement date will be early July 2022. Contracts are required to be commercially registered.
