The Department requires a skilled Applied Statistician/Econometrician with at least three years’ R programming experience to work in a biosecurity system modelling team delivering analytics. The statistician will work with the Department’s research partner – Centre of Excellence for Biosecurity Risk Analysis (CEBRA), fellow statisticians and data analysts, and policy/operational stakeholders to develop and implement existing and emerging biosecurity system modeling approaches to contribute to the national evidence-based policy making process, including the area of strategic resource allocation. The work involves modeling conditional probabilities of the approach, entry, establishment and spread of pests and diseases in Australia, and agricultural and environmental impacts.
Responsibilities will include:
a) Understanding and improving existing biosecurity pathway models, resource allocation and expenditure models and pest impact models. This work may include integrating model uncertainty, embedding a geospatial dimension in Bayesian Network models, pest/disease spread and impact modelling.
b) Leading standalone projects on biosecurity-related statistical questions around experimental design, statistical power and analysis approaches.
c) Communicating modeling techniques and results, to a wide range of audiences.
d) Contributing to team efforts around best-practice data collection, quality control and documentation.
