Conventional polyethylene mulches are widely used in global speciality crop production systems and to a lesser extent in broadacre agricultural production. Biodegradable plastic mulches (BDMs) offer an environmentally sustainable alternative to conventional polyethylene products. A consultant is required to identify and shortlist commercial BDM products or those under development, that offer potential for productivity gains in Australian broadacre crop production. BDM attributes that facilitate capture of fallow season rainfall and limit or prevent soil evaporative loss are the priority. Supressing weeds and/or improving crop establishment may be secondary benefits. Co-development opportunities are considered part of the global scan for suitable BDM and will require a business prospectus for GRDC investment consideration.
