Tender Description
The recruitment and selection process for medical specialists to join the Specialist Medical Assessment Tribunal (SMAT) is now open.
Medical assessment tribunals are established under the Workers’ Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2003 to provide an independent and non-adversarial system of medical review and assessment of injury and impairment sustained by workers.
The SMAT comprises of practitioners from the following specialties:
- Neurology
- Otorhinolaryngolog (ENT)
- Disfigurement
- Ophthalmology
- Cardiology
- Dermatology
- Orthopaedics
The process includes a merit-based selection process to identify suitable nominees for recommendation for appointment to the Minister for Education, Minister for Industrial Relations, and Minister for Racing.
Workers’ Compensation Regulatory Services is establishing an independent selection panel to assist with this process and seeks the RACP nomination of a senior representative to take part in the selection panel for tribunal applicants.
The nominated representative should not be a doctor applying to become a tribunal member.
Selection panel members will be asked to review the applications and participate in a meeting of the selection panel in February 2022. Interviews of applicants will not be necessary.
The time required for reviewing applications is estimated at approximately 4 hours with the meeting to review the applications to take approximately 2 hours. Selection panel members will be paid a flat fee of $1,500 for their time reviewing applications and participating in the selection meeting.
