Rehabilitation earthworks at Brookstead Landfill

⁠⁠⁠Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) previously operated the waste facility at Brookstead, on Lot 80 Plan 80RP835798 and extending into an adjacent road reserve, some 3 km west of the township on the Brookstead-Norwin Road, and approximately 60km west-south-west of Toowoomba.

Lot 80 is rectangular in shape and has an area of 0.69 hectares however the inferred extent of past landfilling extends to the west into the adjacent road reserve. The total inferred waste mass footprint is estimated to be 3.05ha. The road reserve is irregular in shape reflecting that it encompasses a bend in

the Brookstead-Norwin Road.

It should be noted Brookstead-Norwin Road is a State Controlled Road (SCR) and therefore this road reserve is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) therefore the contractor must ensure compliance with the Road Corridor Permit requirements during construction.

Current access to the landfill is via a gravel crossover and short driveway off Brookstead-Norwin Road. The general location of the landfill and its environs are shown on the Site Locality Plan presented in Appendix A

The site closed in 2012. As part of its Waste Strategy, Council is proceeding with rehabilitation of this site to reduce exposure to environmental risks and ongoing maintenance costs.
