Tender Description

Queensland Hydro designs, delivers, operates and maintains world-class, long duration pumped hydro energy storage assets to provide reliable, clean energy for Queensland.

The team draws on their extensive engineering, environmental and social impact expertise to deliver certainty throughout the project life cycle, working with stakeholders to create lasting benefits for communities.

Our projects will play a critical role in helping meet the Queensland Government's renewable energy and net zero emissions targets, supporting the shift to a decarbonized energy system in Australia.

We are currently working on two key projects:

  • The 2,000MW Borumba Pumped Hydro Project, located at Lake Borumba near Imbil, approximately 50km south-west of Gympie
  • The 5,000MW Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro Project, located in the Pioneer Valley approximately 75km west of Mackay.
About Borumba Pumped Hydro Project

The Borumba Pumped Hydro Project is an energy storage project capable of dispatching up to 2,000 MW of continuous power for a period of up to 24 hours. The Project is key in reaching Queensland's renewable energy targets. In June 2023, the Queensland Government committed $6 billion to progress the project.

Queensland Hydro is committed to providing opportunities for local suppliers and local employment for Gympie, the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and surrounding regions. We encourage interested businesses to register their expression of interest via this Gateway.

Delivery schedule

Announcement of the Queensland Government's final investment decision means that the Project will now formally move into the planning and approvals process for both the exploratory works and main works.

Pending successful environmental approvals, exploratory works are due to commence in Q3 2023, with main works to commence by late 2025.

Exploratory works will comprise detailed geological investigations including geotechnical drilling and excavation of an exploratory tunnel to the proposed underground powerhouse cavern, road improvements, construction of access tracks, and construction of temporary exploratory workers' camps and supporting infrastructure.

Main works for the project will include construction of a new lower Borumba dam, the upper reservoir dams, tunnels and underground powerhouse, and associated construction facilities such as access roads and surface works including switch yard, quarries, and construction camps.

The project is targeting first power in 2030.
