Tender Description

The purpose of the study is to investigate and evaluate the application of low-cost perceptual countermeasure (PCM) treatments in tunnels as a means to improve driver speed behaviour and lane discipline within tunnels, thereby reducing crash risk.

Deliverables:
The final deliverable is a research report that identifies PCM treatments (trialled within a driving 'tunnel' simulator), that may be suitable to reduce the incidence and severity of crashes at tunnels. The project will be delivered in two stages. Stage 1 will be Milestones 1.01 to 1.04. Should the Tunnel Taskforce endorse the recommendations of Stage 1 then the project will proceed to Stage 2 (Milestones 1.06 onwards).

Stage 1
An interim deliverable (milestone 1.04) will be a progress report that:
* identifies possible PCM treatments providing advantages and disadvantages for each
* recommends possible PCM treatments to be trialled in a driving 'tunnel' simulator
* confirms the methodology to be used to test the PCM treatments.

Stage 2
Depending on the outcome of Stage 1, the PCM treatments to be trialled will be selected and designed (based on the outcomes of AP-R557-18: Measures to Reduce Crashes Adjacent to and within Tunnels) and updated based on recent literature.
