Tender Description

Project E: Enabling analytics for grain crop monitoring applications - High temporal and spatial resolution measures of plant available soil water (PAW).

This procurement is part of a tender consisting of five interrelated procurements. Applicants may apply for one, all or any combination of the ‘Enabling analytics for grain crop monitoring applications’ procurements listed. For further information visit: https://grdc.com.au/research/applying-and-reporting/current-procurement/open-tenders.

Plant available soil water (PAW) is a foundational data layer used to predict crop yield and guide many tactical and strategic decisions on-farm. Multiple tools and technologies are used to estimate PAW, each with their own limitations regarding cost, accuracy, precision, spatial, temporal and vertical resolution. The development of a unifying analytical framework for soil moisture prediction throughout a profile that integrates (where possible) the value of remote sensing products with water balance models, soil type classification systems (e.g. ASRIS), electro-magnetic soil surveys, in-situ measurements (i.e. soil moisture probes) and relevant agronomic data layers would be a key enabler for Australian grain growers and the broader Australian grains industry.
