Estimate of the amount of water intercepted by different land uses across Victoria and how this has changed

Large-scale increases in some land uses, such as plantations, can significantly affect flow in watercourses and recharge rates of aquifers, reducing the amount of water available to other water users and the environment. A better understanding of the risks to water availability associated with land use is needed to support sustainable water management in Victoria.

In recent years, DELWP have carried out several studies to better understand the impact of land cover changes on water availability, developed tools to estimate these impacts and obtained better information about the extent of plantations.

An improved understanding of the volumes of water intercepted by different land uses, including commercial plantations will be a valuable input for upcoming strategies such as: the Water Resource Plan (WRP) for Northern Victoria, the Long-Term Water Resources Assessment and future Sustainable Water Strategies. It is also reported in the Victorian Water Accounts.

The Department is seeking responses to this Request for Tender (RFT) 335380 for the provision of services to estimate the amount of water intercepted by different land uses across Victoria and how this has changed.
