The Mental Health Commission seeks to purchase ten (10) non-acute community long-stay beds, under the High Dependency Unit (HDU) model of care. The proposed new beds will be located in the community in residential aged care facilities for Older Adults in the north metropolitan region and provide high quality, individualised mental health services for older adults with a severe mental illness The service is planned to commence operation in January 2017.
These additional places are intended to reduce avoidable admissions and lengths of stay in psychogeriatric inpatient units for older adults with mental illness who have behavioural disturbance that precludes them from living in mainstream aged care settings. There is some flexibility as to the model of care to be provided, and the beds can be based at one residential aged care facility or dispersed over a number of residential aged care facilities. However, the HDU model of care cannot be compromised if the respondent proposes the latter option.
