Augmented Reality Project

⁠⁠⁠Deakin will develop a scalable enterprise Augmented Reality (AR) digital offering to enable any area of the University to build and maintain their own augmented content in AR 'Channels'.

Deakin does not currently have an enterprise AR offering. A Proof of Concept (PoC) multi-lingual AR application was trialled at the Deakin Burwood Open Day in 2014. The success of the PoC, and subsequent interest from many areas of the University, led to this project to deliver a scalable enterprise AR platform and framework.

The project will deliver these initial AR Channels:
* DUELI (Deakin University English Language Institute): An on-demand 24/7 orientation tour to introduce new students to DUELI's facilities and relevant campus buildings, and the augmentation of important orientation materials and the DUELI foyer walls.
* Campus Orientation: Key geographical Points of Interest (POIs) on all four campuses augmented with rich contextual information and links to wayfinding navigation.
* School of IT: A limited access developers channel for both staff and students from the School of IT to have a platform to experiment and trial AR offerings.

This project will be inclusive of:
* An end user application for mobile devices, delivering several initial AR Channels as Stage 1 of Deakin's AR offering
* An easy-to-use AR content management system (CMS) for Deakin AR content authors
* Back-end technical infrastructure and enterprise platform
* Information Architecture (IA) for the AR platform, accommodating a range of channels which can be developed for any number of areas across the University (this includes a back-end IA for the CMS and a front-end IA for the app)
* Support for multi-lingual content, where appropriate
* Support of the new AR platform through development and delivery of standards, guides, training materials and face-to-face training to enable ongoing management and evolution of the offering.
