Tender Description

Under the Water Act 1989, Catchment Management Authorities (CMAs) are required to develop Regional Waterway Strategies to guide strategic investment in waterway management over a ten ‑ year period. These strategies encompass rivers, wetlands and floodplains, and aim to maintain or improve environmental condition while supporting environmental, cultural, social (including recreational), and economic values.

The renewed North East RWS will include:

  • A regional overview of waterway values
  • Identification of threats, challenges and opportunities
  • A 50 ‑ year vision for waterways in the region
  • Long ‑ term (20 ‑ year) and medium ‑ term (10 ‑ year) environmental outcomes
  • Defined categories of management areas
  • Identification and/or ranking of sites for management within each category

The purpose of this project is to develop a prioritisation framework to guide the identification of focus areas for management as part of the renewal of the North East Regional Waterway Strategy (NE RWS). The framework will be based on draft environmental outcome statements and will result in the use or development of decision support tools (DSTs) and/or structured prioritisation processes tailored to different categories of management areas.

The prioritisation framework will explicitly link management area categories to medium ‑ term environmental outcomes (see Appendix A for example management areas and draft outcomes). Each category will be assessed and defined according to its potential contribution to achieving these outcomes.
