Tender Description

To repair slope failures at culvert sites on the Schlink Pass Road, which is a critical road corridor within KNP providing NPWS and Snowy Hydro Limited with access between Guthega and Geehi.

Project goals

The Schlink Pass Road is a critical road corridor within KNP providing NPWS and Snowy Hydro Limited with access between Guthega and Geehi and access along the northern end of the Geehi River valley. Schlink Pass Road is the only access road in this remote region of KNP.

The slope failure at the culvert sites has narrowed the trafficable width of the road to under 4 metres and caused almost vertical downslope embankment. These physical characteristics at the two culvert sites dramatically increase the probability of further embankment failures and if these were to occur the road would become unsafe and have to be closed. The Schlink Pass Road at the culvert sites cannot be bypassed or re-routed due to terrain and topography of the area.

The road carrying capacity has been downgraded to a 5 tonne carrying capacity. This reduced carrying capacity severely limits the vehicles that can traverse the road and limits operational activities such as road maintenance and Snowy Hydro activities.

Schlinks Pass Road provides access to a remote region within KNP and access to Snowy Hydro assets within the Geehi River Valley. There is no alternate access road into this region. Schlinks Pass Road also provide alternate emergency egress from the vicinity of Geehi Dam and, as such, is an important emergency route.

Scope

  • Prior to mobilising to site the Contractor is to prepare the works methodology, works program, WHS and environmental plans for the works and all other preparatory administration as per the Preliminaries Clauses.
  • Mobilise to site and establish site facilities and safety and environmental controls.
  • Excavate the road cutting faces to widen the road bench to provide space for the works, improve upper slope stability and site drainage.
  • Excavate the road bench (road surface) to a depth of 3 metres as per design.
  • Construct terramesh reinforced gabion retaining walls (rock filled baskets with steel reinforcement). The walls are backfilled with specified soil to return the road to the proper level.
  • Install culverts and associated drainage structures including half-round corrugated steel pipe and reno mattresses.
  • Dispose of excess soil from site to an appropriate disposal site external to KNP.
  • Undertake rehabilitation works.
  • Clean site and demobilise.
