Job details

The Bureau of Meteorology are seeking an experienced software developer to join the Climate and Oceans Support Program in the Pacific's (COSPPac's) team as a Pacific Senior Database Developer.

Australia is committed to supporting weather, ocean and climate science in the Pacific, as climate variability represents a major risk for most of these Pacific Island countries. The Bureau has been supporting the Pacific for over 30 years to build resilience for climate, oceans and extreme events. COSPPac is currently in its phase 3, is a major component of the assistance provided by Australia to enable 15 partner Pacific Island countries and territories (Palau, Federated State of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, PNG, Solomon Islands Vanuatu, Fiji, Tonga, Niue, Samoa, Tokelau, Cook Islands, Nauru, Kiribati and Tuvalu) adapt to, and mitigate, the impacts of climate variability and change.

The role will contribute to the development and testing of a climate data management system known as Climate Data for the Environment (CliDE). The Pacific Senior Database Developer will aim to improve CliDE to better manage climate and ocean data of the Pacific National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs). CliDE is a cut-down version of the ADAM database which has a web-based interface, customisable key entry forms, quality assurance tools, station metadata forms, climate reports and data file extracts. In addition to manual key entry, bulk manual and automated ingesting of data is possible. Maintaining and enhancing these features requires knowledge and experience in using Open Source and Commercial technologies, particularly Linux (Ubuntu), PostgreSQL, Python, HTML/PHP and JavaScript. Experience with Amazon Web Services, Apache, Bootstrap, Leaflet and High charts is advantageous.

The developer will be required to provide and maintain technical documentation working with project team members, partner countries, and international collaborators, deploy hardware or install software updates in person or remotely and provide support to administrators and users based in the Pacific that have, in some cases, limited IT knowledge. Other tasks include the provision of IT training to CliDE administrators and report on work undertaken to program management.

In addition to delivering operational tasks, the role will be required to interact with Pacific stakeholders, including building partnerships and relationships with implementation partners and Pacific NMHSs. Travel with short stays (~3-10 days) in Pacific Island countries is an essential part of this role. The successful candidate will also be required carry out their duties with limited supervision.

The aim of this role is to develop and improve the CliDE management system, including technical documentation and training, and to build partnerships/relationships with the project's Implementing Partners and Pacific NMHSs.
