The purpose of the grant is to provide funding support to Rio Tinto Aluminium Limited (ABN 51 009 679 127) and Summit Hydrogen Gladstone Pty Ltd (ABN 22 657 941 038) to complete the Yarwun Calcination Trial. The Yarwun Calcination Trial aims to develop technology that can decarbonise the alumina refining process, by utilising hydrogen. Through this work, the grant aligns with the Australian Government’s Net Zero by 2050 commitment.
It contributes to achieving the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW)’s PBS Outcome 1 Program 1.2: Support reliable, secure and affordable energy.
The objective of the grant is to support the completion of the Yarwun Calcination Trial for developing the hydrogen calcination technology that will utilise hydrogen in alumina refining.
The intended outcomes of the grant are:
- successful integration of hydrogen into the alumina refining process
- increased clean hydrogen industry regional jobs
- increased investment in the Australian hydrogen industry.
