Tender Description
Purpose
Austroads seeks responses from appropriately experienced service providers to complete research, reporting and dissemination into detection of bicycles and similar users at traffic signals.
Objective
Provide accurate and up to date advice to road managers to reflect evolution in business needs and technology capability.
Scope
This work package will culminate in the publication of a Research Report addressing detection of bicycles and similar users on roads at signalised intersections, supported by a Webinar.
- Research component 1: The Consultant shall establish the requirements (business, functional, and where relevant, technical) for detection of bicycles and similar users at traffic signals, relevant to the context of traffic signal operations, infrastructure and systems across Australia and New Zealand.
- Research component 2: Following the establishment of requirements, investigations shall inform findings on:
- What sensor modalities (and processing, configuration, extent of any model training, mounting positions) are best aligned with the requirements
- How the capabilities and limitations of available technologies and practical deployments of such shape what can be achieved in an economical, fit-for-purpose mass deployment
- Relevant performance evidence
- What conditions adversely affect performance (e.g. weather, light, mounting position, traffic density, etc.) and the extent of their effects
- How does the performance of leading or state of the art bicycle detectors compare with those currently commonly deployed in Australia and New Zealand, including general purpose inductive loops near stop-lines
