The Parkville Precinct Redevelopment (PPR Project) will expand capacity at the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) and the Royal Women’s Hospital (the Women’s) by delivering modern, flexible facilities that support contemporary models of care. It will also enhance functional connections across the Parkville Precinct.

As part of the enabling works, the Materials Handling Building (MHB) will be decanted, decommissioned and demolished to prepare the site for redevelopment under the PPR Project. VHBA, on behalf of the State, will lead these works, in partnership with RMH and the Women’s.

Provision of Services:

VHBA is intending to release a Request for Tender (RFT) in August 2025 to pre-qualified suppliers within the Construction Supplier Register (CSR) for a main works contractor for the decanting, decommissioning and demolition of the MHB located on the RMH site in Parkville. The procurement model selected is a bespoke Managing Contractor contract which includes a Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) component.

To enable demolition of the MHB a significant decanting and services infrastructure relocation project is required. Services infrastructure required to be diverted, relocated or replaced impact RMH, the Women’s, the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI), University of Melbourne (UoM) and Melbourne Private Hospital (MPH).

The MHB currently accommodates a range of hospital back of house and administrative functions. Decanting strategies have been developed. Decanting scope under this package of works will require the construction of a new Logistics and Waste Management building to enable decanting of these services from the MHB. Other decanting scope will take place in partnership VHBA and RMH.

Following VHBA and RMH decanting activities, relocation of services infrastructure and demolition of the multi-level MHB will be undertaken.
