ABOUT THE TENDER
The Mitchell Building is located facing North Terrace, adjacent to the Art Gallery of SA, and was originally constructed in 1879-1881. It is a two-storey building with an additional storey contained within the steeply pitched roof space, and a basement level. The walls are constructed from sandstone masonry, with an external facing of Tea Tree Gully Sandstone (Freestone). The roofs are clad with slate, and there is a metal clad fleche (tower) at the centre of the main southern roof. Along the east and west elevations, the basement level opens to a light void extending up to 3m below ground level. The main entrance on the south elevation has a small portico which appears to be flat roofed.
The steeply pitched slate roofs fall to box gutters behind a low balustraded sandstone parapet or abut tall sandstone masonry gables.
The building now requires significant facade conservation work to address its current deterioration and ensure safe ongoing operation.
