MoAD has made the decision to architect their security perimeter according to Zero Trust architectural and cultural principles. This focuses the primary security perimeter on individual user identities by applying a never trust and always verify approach. From an identity perspective, this approach demands that each user sign in evaluated for conformance with pre-defined authorisation requirements.
MoAD requires assistance in defining the identity personas and information assets within the MoAD IT environment. These identity personas will form one of the core components of MoAD’s zero-trust security architecture. Understanding the information assets and their classification will enable the establishment of the appropriate policies to implement a robust Zero Trust architecture. These personas and information assets can then be leveraged across various security control systems, including Microsoft Entra ID Conditional Access, Secure Access Service Edge (SASE), and other similar systems that require continual evaluation of a user’s authorisation to access services.
Conditional Access is Microsoft’s Zero Trust Identity Policy Engine. It is the primary means by which Entra ID determines whether a given user is authorised to access a given resource based on relevant signals. As such it represents a critical component of a Zero Trust identity configuration.
The recent ASD Blueprint assessment of MoAD’s Entra ID configuration highlighted several risks in the configuration of Conditional Access. These risks have emerged over time due to a combination of factors, including changes made by Microsoft, evolving MoAD requirements, and configuration drift. It is important to note that all organisations struggle to manage conditional access due to their complexity and Microsoft continually releasing changes.
