Tender Description

Purpose/Objective:

The purpose of this project is to develop national guidelines for occupational therapists (OTs) conducting driver assessments to determine fitness to drive, thus addressing the lack of national guidance material in this area.

These guidelines will:

  • Provide a unified framework to support a consistent, evidence-based approach to assessing fitness to drive for individuals with medical conditions and disabilities.
  • Support OT driver assessors in their collaboration with medical practitioners, other health professionals, and driver licensing authorities (DLAs).
  • Support OTs in assisting drivers and their carers in managing outcomes, including transitioning to non-driving when necessary.
  • Align with the national Assessing Fitness to Drive (AFTD) standards.

Scope:

The project will include:

  • Development of the technical content for the National Guidelines for OT Driver Assessors, based on the existing Victorian guidelines.
  • Development of associated consumer information to support the OT driver assessment process.
  • Design and digital publication of the guidelines document and resources.
  • Development of an implementation strategy to promote the adoption and consistent application of the guidelines nationally.
  • Development of a GP fact sheet, driver fact sheet and reporting template for OT driver assessments.

Out of scope:

  • Implementation of the guidelines. This will be addressed post-publication, aligning with the next AFTD review and other broader AFTD implementation initiatives.

Deliverables:

This project will produce the following main deliverables:

  • Professional guideline – National Guidelines for OT Driver Assessors
  • Consultation plan and delivery of consultation
  • Accompanying resources, including: GP fact sheet, driver fact sheet and a reporting template for OT driver assessments
  • Implementation strategy
  • Research report describing the development of the guideline, including consultation and implementation strategy.
