Tender Description
East Gippsland Shire Council invites tenders for the above contract.
Any pretender meetings or on-site inspections, if applicable, please refer to Part 1 - Conditions of Tendering.
SCOPE:
The East Gippsland Shire Council requests tenders from suitably qualified and experienced contractors for the construction of the Buchan - Orbost Road Landslide Remediation Works. The site is located on Buchan - Orbost Road at Chainage 2.80km, just East of the Buchan township.
Buchan - Orbost Road begins at Gelantipy Road in Buchan and winds its way south eastward past rural farmland and dense bushland. It provides a critical link between Buchan and Orbost for landholders and emergency vehicles and no detours are available, excepting the Princes Highway through Nowa Nowa. As such, the Buchan – Orbost Road must remain open throughout the duration of the works.
The site consists of two slides, separated by approximately 20m. The Western landslide is approximately 35m wide, whilst the Eastern landslide is approximately 20m wide. The horizontal extent of both landslides is in the order of 15 to 20m. 150mm of asphalt was placed as temporary remedial works where subsidence has occurred to reinstate the original road geometry, however the landslide is expected to progress with rainfall.
The Buchan - Orbost Road is relatively steep and winding on both approaches to the location of the works. The site is perched approximately 30 metres above the Buchan River below. The site is abutted by farmland to the North and South, with a 40° cutting to the North and a 35° slope to the South.
The proposed remediation works include the construction of two new retaining walls at each of the landslides. It is proposed that the nominal freestanding (retained) height of the walls is up to 1.4m; however, due to the risk of further instability in the form of slumping of soil down the slope, a maximum freestanding height of 3 m has been accounted for in the design should additional lagging be required in future. The walls are supported by steel UC sections that are cast into bored pile concrete footings. These UC sections have tie-back anchor rods to a reinforced concrete deadman anchor located beneath the road pavement. The works also include the installation of steel guard fence and pavement construction.
