Inland Rail is a fast freight backbone stretching more than 1,600km that will transform how we move goods around Australia by providing transit times of less than 24 hours between Melbourne and Brisbane.
It will better link businesses, manufacturers and producers to national and global markets and generate new opportunities for existing and emerging industries.
Comprising 12 individual projects, Inland Rail is the largest freight rail infrastructure project in Australia and will enable safer, less congested highways, fewer carbon emissions, cheaper freight costs and new economic opportunities for our regions.
Inland Rail is a shot in the arm for Australia's economy, generating $18b in economic benefits and more than 21,500 direct and indirect jobs.
Inland Rail Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of ARTC, is building Inland Rail on behalf of the Australian Government.
Illabo to Stockinbingal
The Inland Rail - Illabo to Stockinbingal (I2S) Project is a 39-kilometre greenfield section where a new track will be constructed in a newly established rail corridor, just east of Illabo, tracking north to Stockinbingal, NSW.
This new section of rail corridor will provide a direct route from Illabo to Stockinbingal through to the existing Forbes line. The line will bypass Cootamundra and the steep and windy Bethungra Range with the Bethungra Spiral.
Bypassing the Bethungra Spiral will improve reliability and reduce travel distance by approximately 23 kilometres.
Burley Griffin Way will undergo a major realignment and a new road over rail bridge will be built. This will enable the closure of one of the existing rail level crossings in Stockinbingal, improving safety. In addition, Ironbong Road will undergo a minor realignment around the proposed level crossing to improve safety.
The project connects with the Albury to Illabo (A2I) and Stockinbingal to Parkes (S2P) enhancement projects.
The Works include:
- 39 kilometres of new single track standard gauge railway
- Construction of 11 bridges, 8 being across waterways, 2 rail over road and 1 road over rail
- Construction of 1 crossing loop and associated maintenance siding
- Construction of 6 public level crossings and 9 private level crossings
- Construction of 11 stock underpasses
- Construction and upgrade of 88 new and existing cross drainage culverts
- Construction of 27 longitudinal drainage culverts below level crossings
- Upgrading approximately 3km of track and formation within the existing rail corridor
